Ingredient Ratings Pore Clogging

The Importance of Reading Ingredients in Skin Care

Just like you read labels on food before buying it, you should read labels on all your skin application products. Some commonly used ingredients distress your skin and, by blocking your pores, this may be the one of the causes of acne. Most of the chemicals going into our toiletries are no different from the harsh, toxic chemicals used in the car and manufacturing industry.

Read all labels to do with skin care. You will find these ingredients in many commercial skin preparations including sunscreens and certain brands of soap. Since skin is permeable, whatever is applied to it will have to be dealt with by the liver and the liver's easiest route to get rid of unwanted matter is through the skin.

For example, propylene glycol (PC) is a wetting agent and solvent used in make-up, hair care products, deodorants and aftershave. It's also the main ingredient in antifreeze and brake fluid. Similarly polyethylene glycol (PEG), a related agent found in most skin cleansers, is a caustic used to dissolve grease the same substance you find in oven cleaners. Isopropyl, an alcohol used in hair-color rinses, hand lotions and fragrances, is also a solvent found in shellac. Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), used in toothpastes, shampoos and just about every personal cleansing solution, is a harsh detergent commonly used as an engine degreaser. Too many of the toiletries and cosmetics we use are simply carcinogenic cocktails of hazardous waste.
